What is Main Lesson?
Main lesson is a class unique to Waldorf education. In main lesson, children are given an opportunity to dive deep into a concept each day for a month. During this time (which can be two hours each day), students are called upon to be attentive and inquisitive. The teacher helps with this challenging intellectual work by ensuring each lesson is full of movement, artistic expression and musical opportunities.
To make the curriculum's academic work more interesting and connected, a wide range of themes are used. Themes, like the Roman Empire or Norse Mythology, infuse lessons on spelling or grammar (for example) in that main lesson block. Themes vary with each grade level to ensure that the material meets the children at their particular developmental stage. Some Grade 5/6 main lesson blocks this school year are: Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Botany, Mineralogy, Decimals, and Business Math.
